Name: Esqyn
Nicknames: Esqyn, Luce (nickname for Lucem Vitae, his healer's name)
Age: 20
Race: Shapeshifter
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Homosexual
Form(s): Coyote, American Kestrel, Otter
Favored Form: Coyote
Attributes: Takes the abilities of the animal form they shift into at that time.
Appearance:
Esqyn has light blonde hair and fair skin, as if he had primarily Northern heritage. His eyes are a lovely shade of blue-green, and usually lit up by a smile. His features are graceful and beautiful, and he stands at roughly five-foot-eight, with a slender build.
Personality: Esqyn is a very hard-working person, and has a powerful drive to help other people. He always believes in the good in people, and is typically courteous and kind to everyone he meets. He tends to overwork himself, especially if it is on another person's account, as he usually puts everyone else's well-being above his own. The rare people that he doesn't like, such as those who hurt others for fun or betray others, he speaks to only very curtly, and with a narrowed gaze rather than his usual open smile. He's easily frustrated with people who are careless or reckless, and can become easily stressed when dealing with a difficult injury, or multiple patients. When stressed or frustrated, he typically starts pacing, telling people that they really need to be more careful, and having a shorter temper. He tends to truly overwork himself in these sorts of situations, as well, too. When it happens, he's known to ignore sleep or have troubles getting to sleep, and develop dark circles under his eyes. The only person who can truly calm him down and get him to sleep in these scenarios is Jacob.
History: Esqyn grew up with parents who cared about him, and his future, very much. They were farmers, primarily, growing vegetables, herbs, and fruits to sell at market. Wanting their son to have a future that guarenteed he wouldn't go hungry, they sent him away to apprentice to an old rootworker lady. He learned how to identify every single plant he saw, and many too rare for him to have seen during his apprenticeship. He learned which were poisonous, which ones could heal, and which could soothe. He learned about the deadly foxglove, which could kill a man in twenty minutes, but if a small enough dose was taken, could slow the heartrate beneficially. He learned to make concoctions, tinctures, salves, and so much more, and how to treat a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. He learned how mint hardly needed any tending in the garden (other than cutting it back so that it didn't take over), but that sage would not grow in overly moist conditions, and moonflower seeds required a small scratch and darkness in order to sprout.
His apprenticeship ended when the old rootworker had fallen deathly ill. She was very old, and her immune system was not up to fighting the killer known as viral pneumonia. Esqyn treated her, using everything she had taught him, and even combining herbs that she hadn't taught him in order to help her battle the disease. She slept so very much, and would hardly drink or eat, but he coaxed both down her throat, and in a moment of clarity, she turned to him and told him, "My boy, you have been a spectacular student. You pick things up faster than I could have imagined, and are full of brilliant new ideas, too. There is only one last lesson that you have not yet learned -- one that you must learn now. Some illnesses, some injuries, are and always will be beyond you. No matter how good you are, fatal is fatal. I'm dying, Esqyn. It's too late for feverfew and willow tea. You have to let me go, dear."
Given Esqyn's personality, though, the old rootworker's speech had the exact opposite effect on him. Despite her protests, he renewed his efforts at healing her with the energy of a madman, denying himself sleep and food as he brewed new conconctions from mixtures of herbs that he'd never heard of being combined. Feverfew, willow bark, purple coneflower, peppermint, and rosehips were only a couple of the multitude of ingredients conbined together. When she was too weak to take it as a tea, he used a dropper and dilligently made sure that every ounce of it ended up down her throat. When she was too weak to eat, he boiled thick broth and did the same with that.
Despite every possibility, after a week of this, the rootworker's condition turned completely around. She began to get better, and shortly after was healthier than Esqyn had ever seen her. Astounded, she told him that his apprenticeship was complete. He was more knowledgeable and talented than she could dream of being, now. To mark his completed apprenticeship, she gave him his healers name: Lucem Vitae, or Light of Life. Those who know his tradename sometimes call him Luce, or Light.
Esqyn came home to his parents to give them the news, to which they were thrilled. He lived with them awhile longer, helping them to prosper, but soon they gently suggested that he should find his own way in the world, rather than being held back by a couple of old farmers. Reluctantly, he agreed, and set out on his own. At first, he wandered, taking shelter anywhere that someone needed his services. As his parents had wished, he never went hungry.
His profession soon took him to the Cuori Aperti. He stayed with them for at least a couple of weeks, helping their youngest girl through a respiratory infection, and that's how he met Jacob. Jacob was sweet and playful, and they became fast friends. As Jacob helped Esqyn with whatever he could, and kept him company during the downtime, Esqyn began to see the lycan in a new light. He was drawn to Jacob inevitably, and began to fall rapidly head-over-heels for him. It wasn't one-sided, either, as Esqyn found out when Jacob stole his first kiss. Since then, the two have been together, and Esqyn was invited into their group. Wanting to help out as much as possible, he began a vast garden filled with every finicky healing herb he could find, as well as a menagerie of tea and spice herbs, vegetable plants, and fruit plants. He offers his services happily to anyone who needs it, and although many people insist on giving him something for his services, which helps a great deal, he doesn't require it and has been known to take in any patient.
